Just Because God Doesn’t Specify How Often, How Long, How Much

Just because we don’t know exactly where the line is on something, that doesn’t mean we can’t know what is right or wrong in that area. For example, God never tells us how many minutes per week to pray, but that doesn’t mean we don’t know a Christian is violating I Thess 5:17 if they haven’t prayed at all in a month. God doesn’t tell us exactly how many inches the length of a woman’s dress must be, but that doesn’t mean we can’t know a bikini doesn’t violate I Tim 2:9-10. God doesn’t tell us exactly how long a woman’s hair must be, but that doesn’t mean we can’t know that short or even medium length hair is a violation of I Cor 11:15. On the other side of the coin, I can’t tell you exactly how many centimeters it takes for a man to have long hair and therefore be in violation of I Cor 11:14, but I think we know it when we see it.  God doesn’t tell us how often to fast, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a sin if we never fast (Matt 6:16-18, etc.). God doesn’t tell us exactly how much time we should be involved in personal evangelism, but that doesn’t mean it is okay not to be diligent in that activity (Acts 8:1,4, Matt 28:19-20). God doesn’t tell us exactly how much time we should spend studying our Bibles, but that doesn’t mean that zero time is not a sin (II Tim 2:15). There is no set frequency given for marital relations, but we still know that none is wrong (I Cor 7:3-5). Just because we don’t know for sure how much time we should direct toward correcting our brethren (Acts 20:26-27,31), that doesn’t excuse us from neglecting that responsibility.
