Jonathan Loved David - Was That Gay?
I Sam 18:1 reads “and Jonathan loved him (David) as his own soul.” The Gay Church says that proves Jonathan and David were gay lovers. Does the evidence warrant such a conclusion?First let’s look at how this same Hebrew word is used in other verses:• love of son Gen 22:2• servant's love of master Exod 21:5• parent's love of children Exod 21:5• love of neighbor Lev 19:18• love of friend Job 19:19• man’s love of God Exod 20:6• love of friends Esther 5:10• God’s love of man Deut 4:37Are any of those uses referring to romantic love? If not, why would anybody assume the word’s use in I Sam 18:1 refers to such?Next let’s look more closely at some other examples in I Samuel itself:16:21 And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armor-bearer.18:16 But all Israel and Judah loved David, because he went out and came in before them.18:22 And Saul commanded his servants, saying, commune with David secretly, and say, Behold, the king hath delight in thee, and all his servants love thee: now therefore be the king's son in law.Are any of those cases referring to gay sex? Of course not, and so neither is I Sam 18:1.I Sam 18:1 has nothing to do with sex. It is just talking about the love between two very close friends, kind of like the love between a Daddy and his son.
