God Hates Sin But Loves Us

Do you hate sin? You should; God does. God hates sin so much that when the world became full of wickedness in Noah’s day, God became sorry he had ever made man and decided to destroy man from the face of the earth (Genesis 6:5-7). Have you ever wanted to kill your children for their disobedience to you? Not me. God was ready to kill His created children. He must really hate sin (Psalms 10:3). Maybe that’s one of the reasons why when God (the Son) came to earth in the flesh (John 1:1,14), He was able to live without sin (Hebrews 4:15). Do we hate sin as much as God does?

Thankfully God’s love for us helps counter His hatred of our sin. Consider this analogy which is a take-off of Mark 12:1-9: Let’s say you were a real smart scientist and one day you made some ants and put them in an ant bed (Genesis 1:1, 27). Then the ants became wicked and did everything except what you said (Genesis 6:5). So you took your son, put him in an ants body (Philippians 2:6), and sent him down to the ant bed to tell the ants to obey you. The ants then got your son, tortured him, and finally killed him (John 19:23, Mark 12:8). What would you do? I don’t know about you but I’d probably stomp and burn that ant bed. God didn’t though. Instead, God forgave the repentant the murder of His Son (Acts 2:36-38) and all their other sins (Matthew 26:28) – based upon His Son’s death (John 3:16). That is love (Romans 5:6-8).
