Unlawfully Married Couples - Why Must They Separate ?
Matthew 19:9 reads “And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.” Those who stand for the truth on the divorce and remarriage issue insist that a couple involved in an adulterous marriage (per Matthew 19:9) must terminate their marriage. Can’t we see that principle from Mark 6:17-18 which shows Herod and Herodias were in an unlawful marriage? They needed to terminate their marriage to become lawful, right? But why do such have to separate? At least three reasons …Because they have no right to be married; they are not bound (maritally obligated, scripturally married) - Romans 7:2-3Because they need to go back to their rightful spouses - I Corinthians 7:10-11, Romans 7:2-3Because every time they have sexual relations, they commit adultery - Matthew 19:9. What does adultery mean?:· adulterer - denotes one who has unlawful intercourse with the spouse of another (Vines)· Hebrews 13:4 adultery is something done in “the bed”An unlawfully married couple must stop committing that adultery; they must get out of the relationship!
