Luke 18:29-30 Absurdities

Luke 18:29-30 reads “… There is no man that hath left house, or parents, or brethren, or wife, or children, for the kingdom of God's sake, Who shall not receive manifold more in this present time, and in the world to come life everlasting.”Our last “Doctrine Matters” installment pointed out how verse 29 allows (really requires) a man to leave his wife if their marriage is unscriptural (per Matt 19:9) because that is the only way it could be “for the kingdom of God's sake.” However some still insist Luke 18:29 gives permission for a man to divorce his scriptural wife for reasons other than fornication. For example gospel preacher Mike Willis teaches one can leave one’s spouse if they become an emotional or financial burden.But notice the following parallel absurdities pointed out by my friend David McKee …“Owe no one anything” (Romans 13:8a), “the wicked borroweth, and payeth not again” (Psalms 37:21) … unless making the payments for your house becomes an emotional or financial burden. Then you may, “for the sake of the kingdom of God,” walk away from the responsibility and obligation of paying what you owe on your house (Luke 18:29).“Children…honor your father and mother” (Ephesians 6:2), “but if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his own household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever” (I Tim 5:8) … unless your father and mother become an emotional or financial burden. Then you can, “for the sake of the kingdom of God,” walk away from all responsibility towards them (Luke 18:29).“Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb is a reward” (Psalms 127:3), “Fathers, bring up your children in the training and admonition of the Lord” (Ephesians 6:4), “Admonish the young women to love their children” (Titus 2:4) … unless your children become an emotional or financial burden. Then, “for the sake of the kingdom of God,” walk away from any responsibility you have towards them (Luke 18:29).“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her” (Ephesians 5:25), “what God has joined together, let not man separate” (Matt 19:6) … unless she becomes an emotional or financial burden. Then you can, “for the sake of the kingdom of God,” divorce her and sever all responsibility towards her (Luke 18:29).Do you see David’s point regarding Mike’s false teaching on Luke 18:29?How do we know Luke 18:29-30 is talking about leaving one’s spouse because the marriage is adulterous (per Matt 19:9)? By process of elimination – it is the only reason a marriage must be terminated for the kingdom of God’s sake.
